9:30 AM: Bike Easy [...]]]> Please join us as we TAKE A HIKE along the Lafitte Greenway on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The annual hike is roughly 3 miles, and parts of the path are overgrown and weedy. So dress accordingly, and you might want to bring some sunscreen. Flip-flops are probably not appropriate footwear!

9:30 AM: Bike Easy will hold a bicycle safety workshop in the Delgado Community College parking lot. Bike Easy will also offer FREE bike valet services for all participants of the hike. Register here!

10 AM: Meet at the Delgado Community College in the parking lot (parking and bike valet available).

1 PM: Finish at Congo Square in Armstrong Park with a culminating celebration featuring Baby Boys Brass Band, refreshments and more.

2 PM: Head to French Quarter Fest!

These times are tentative, as we’ll be hiking in small groups with plenty of fun activities along the way. Different groups will probably move at different speeds.

The Hike and Bike Valet are both FREE and open to the public.

Listed [...]]]> Please join us for a meeting of the Lafitte Greenway Steering Advisory Committee on Friday, February 10th at Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center (2200 Lafitte Street New Orleans, LA 70119). Tentative agenda items include 1) Management plan for the greenway; and 2) Proposed Red Bull skate park. This meeting is open to the public and attendance is encouraged.

Listed below is more information on what the Lafitte Greenway Steering Advisory Committee does and describes its core role:

1) it is charged with advising City Council and City Planning Commission on matters “concerning the development of the Lafitte Greenway.”

2) Committee composition and current appointees are noted on website, except this needs to be updated to show that Lili Legardeur has replaced Bart as appointee of Council District B

3) LGSAC is charged with meeting quarterly at a minimum. Meetings are called as needed, but no more than monthly, with regular time and place being the second Friday of the month, at 9am, at Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center.

4) Meetings are public per State law and a public notice on City’s website at least 24 hours before each meeting.

In order for the proposed site of the greenway to be constructed as a “rails with trails” type amenity on the segment of St. Louis [...]]]> On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Federal Railroad Administration will hold public meetings on the topic of the New Orleans Rail Gateway Program.

In order for the proposed site of the greenway to be constructed as a “rails with trails” type amenity on the segment of St. Louis Street between N. Alexander and Canal Boulevard, the City of New Orleans must negotiate an agreement with Norfolk-Southern. These two meetings offer the public an opportunity to express support for this agreement as part of the Rail Gateway Program.

Please note that the FOLC vision for the greenway embraces the successful accommodation of all existing homes and businesses along the rail-active St. Louis Street leg of the greenway. FOLC will be present at the Tuesday meeting expressing concerns and ideas. If you cannot attend this meeting, please submit letters of support as directed in the public announcement. Thank you for getting out and expressing your support for this important piece of the Lafitte Corridor.

This [...]]]> Tomorrow, Saturday February 4th, the Friends of Lafitte Corridor Hike Committee will meet to kick-off 2012 planning for the anticipated Spring walk. We invite all members of FOLC (and those who wish to participate) to join us at CC’s on Esplanade Avenue. The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the private room.

This will be the 8th Annual Hike the Lafitte Corridor. We have plenty of good ideas and are looking for passionate volunteers who want to be a part of this great event.

The proposed locations for installation are Joe Brown Park, Behrman Memorial [...]]]> NEW ORLEANS, LA – The City and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) announced that three public meetings will be held to review proposed locations for a skate park. In October 2011, a skateboard ramp was donated to the City and NORDC.

The proposed locations for installation are Joe Brown Park, Behrman Memorial Park, or the Lafitte Greenway.

The three public meetings will be held in the New Orleans City Council chamber, 1300 Perdido Street, 1st floor, on the following dates:

• Wednesday, December 21, 2011; 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, December 28, 2011; 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
• Wednesday, January 4, 2012; 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Citizens are encouraged to attend and provide their input.
